Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular electric stimulation, or NMES, is the use of electric energy in order to stimulate specific muscle groups. This works by stimulating the neurons within a muscle to fire, which initiates a chain reaction resulting in muscle movement.  NMES is very effective in:

  •  Preventing disuse atrophy

  • Aiding in neuromuscular re-education

  • Aiding in specific muscle strengthening

Similarly, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or TENS, also uses electricity but with different wave forms to selectively bring endorphins (your body’s own pain killers) into the affected area to reduce pain.

Simply put, TENS is used to treat pain; NMES is used for muscular re-education.
